Storage and Maintenance of Equipment
We all handle
equipment on a daily basis. If it is not used correctly equipment has the
potential to cause serious injuries. Your store's OHS program should ensure
that all equipment is maintained on a regular basis and stored in a safe
manner when not in use.
Important issues to consider are:
- all
machinery must be equipped with adequate guards to ensure the
safety of workers while they operate the machine
- machinery
must be designed and guarded to make it impossible to access the
moving parts while the machine is switched on or in motion
- workers
should not be placed in danger by being required to operate a
faulty machine
- a
worker must be given adequate training before using an unfamiliar
machine
- workers
must be trained in safe work methods
- machinery
should never be modified in a way that bypasses safety mechanisms,
or have on off switches out of the operator's reach
- cleaning
and maintenance operations should be carefully planned so the
machinery can be turned off and isolated
- appropriate
systems, training and supervision, must be in place to eliminate
the risk of a worker attempting to correct a faulty machine.

All businesses
use equipment of some sort. When evaluating the equipment at your store
consider :
- is
the equipment suitable for the task?
- does
the item meet appropriate Standards ?
- are
operators trained in its safe use ?
- is
equipment maintained regularly ?
- is
equipment inspected regularly ?
- is
all equipment safely stored ?
