Characteristics of the Trainer

Perhaps one of the first things that you need to develop with your learners is mutual trust and respect in order to create a positive learning environment.

This can be achieved by recognising and promoting the skills and knowledge of learners in the workplace and the training environment.

There are certain characteristics that make up an effective trainer. What follows highlights these characteristics. Perhaps this may be a good time to reflect on your characteristics and the way you interact with the learners.

Effective trainers:

  • Know their subject - Trainers who know their subject will make clearer presentations. They answer participants' questions effectively without being vague and evasive.
  • Can train for transfer - They show how learning in one situation can be transferred to another situation.
  • Are well organised and give clear presentations - They have the material and the sessions well organised so it is easy to follow and makes sense. Clear presentations and explanations facilitate learning.
  • Are effective communicators - They communicate clearly and effectively. They take the time to listen and respond to participants. They write clearly and speak clearly, and their body language matches their message.
  • Can motivate learners - They have the ability to arouse interest from the start and successfully maintain that interest through a combination of methods, resources and activities.
